Change Codex theme

Change your Codex theme without guessing the install path.

Use native appearance settings for simple color and font changes. Use a real downloadable skin pack only when you want background artwork, source-visible theme files, an agent workflow, readability checks, and a clear restore path.

Change my Codex theme safely. Start with native Settings / Appearance for simple colors and fonts. If I want a downloadable background skin, install $codex-skin-pack-installer, fetch caishen-readable, inspect theme.json/background.png/README.md, apply only after confirming the restore path, then verify Home / Task / Diff / Composer readability.
Step 1

For colors and fonts, stay native

If you only need a lighter interface, stronger contrast, or a different UI/code font, start with Codex appearance settings or a small import token. That keeps the change low-risk and easy to reverse.

Step 2

For backgrounds, fetch files first

A full Codex skin should have real files you can inspect: background.png, theme.json, README.md, and restore notes. Start with Caishen Readable because it is the current lower-strain starter.

python3 "$CODEX_SKILL_DIR/scripts/fetch_skin_pack.py" caishen-readable
Step 3

Apply only after restore is clear

The real test is not the wallpaper. It is whether Codex remains readable in Home, Task, Diff, and Composer, and whether the default appearance can be restored after a restart.

Restore my Codex theme to the default readable appearance. Use the restore path from the installed theme manager or Codex Dream Skin workflow, remove any custom background skin if needed, and verify Home / Task / Diff / Composer are readable again.
Native token

Choose native appearance for colors.

Use this path when you only need a cleaner surface, stronger text, safer contrast, and a quick restore. It is the lowest-friction answer for "change Codex theme" searches because no background injection or theme manager is required.

Downloadable skin pack

Choose Caishen Readable for a real background.

Use this path when the user expects a visible Codex skin, not just colors. The pack includes artwork, metadata, a README, zip files, and readable Home, Task, Diff, and Composer review points.

Theme manager path

Use a manager when switching must survive restarts.

If persistence is the job, install through the active Codex theme manager or Dream Skin workflow and keep the restore command open. That is the practical gap between a pretty preview and something a Codex user can keep using.

Theme starters

Pick a real pack, then change from there.

These starters link to public-safe artwork, theme metadata, zip downloads, and agent prompts. They are not private Codex workspace screenshots.
